Storm Damage
Hail
- A hailstone of less than half an inch in diameter can fall at a rate of 20mph while 3 inch hailstones can fall upwards of 110 mph. The impact generated upon a hailstone hitting your roof can cause dents or depressions that may not be noticeable at first glance. It may also cause granule loss at points of impact. Loss of mineral granules as an immediate or gradual consequence of storm damage can lead to the asphalt coating being directly exposed to the elements. This may lead to accelerated aging of the shingle. Therefore, granule loss is NOT just cosmetic damage, and can result in serious problems if not tended to. Granule loss can also cause asphalt roofs (commonly known as shingle roofs ) to be more exposed to the sun's blistering UV rays (especially in this Texas heat). Within a short period of time this causes deterioration of the shingle and over long periods of time it can cause serious deterioration leaving your home more exposed to the natural elements. Not having your roof replaced or roof repaired can lead to your roof losing its value.
- Is damage immediately noticeable? Not always. This is why you should have an experienced roofer inspect your roof for you. On Top Roofing & Construction's roofing professionals can inspect your roof for free. As we mentioned before a hailstones impact may cause damage that can worsen over time, and result in premature aging of the shingles.
- How can I tell if the roof was damaged? Generally, damage can be seen as indentations and/or fractures on the shingle’s surface. Hailstones vary in size, shape, and hardness and can create a random pattern of dents or depressions. These very subtle differences in your roof can go unnoticed until it is to late.
